Purpose

The
purpose of this policy is to make clear the items which the school has a le=
gal
obligation to confiscate and other items which the Head Teacher and Governi=
ng
Body have taken a view to confiscate in order to maintain an environment
conducive to learning, and ensure the health and safety of all members of t=
he
school community.
The
policy also sets out the arrangements for the retention and disposal of con=
fiscated
items.

Retention and Disposa=

The
Inclusion Team will maintain the record of all confiscated items, including=
any
action taken and the grounds for such action. The date the item is collected, an=
d by
whom, will be recorded.
Where
possible, a note will be written in the pupil’s planner to inform the
parent/carer that an item has been confiscated.
All
confiscated items, other than those mentioned in the Criminal Justice Act 1988, the Prevention
of Crime Act 1953 and the school Drugs
Policy will be stored in the Excellence and Inclusion Office for safe
keeping. Items of value must =
be
taken at the earliest opportunity to the Excellence and Inclusion Office.
Duration
of confiscation
Items wh=
ich have
been confiscated for the first or second occasion, and can be returned to p=
upils,
will be collected at the end of the day from the Excellence and Inclusion
Office. It is the responsibil=
ity of
the pupil to ensure the confiscated item is collected at the agreed time and
place. A letter will be sent =
to
parents/carers when items have been confiscated for the second occasion and=
the
pupil will be given a sanction.
For
health and safety reasons, items of food or drinks will be disposed of if n=
ot
collected at the end of the day.
Where it=
ems such
as jewellery, personal music-players and mobile phones have been confiscated on a third
occasion, they will be returned after seven days. The parent/carer will be
informed by letter and asked to collect the item from the Excellence and
Inclusion Office or Finance Office, giving assurances to the Head of Learni=
ng
that the pupil will not bring the item back into school. Where prohibited items are persiste=
ntly
brought into school, the school has the right to confiscate items for up to
half a term.
